As heise is writing today Microsoft announced the public availability of its 1st beta preview of the new LightSwitch Studio. With it you can design your business models, forms and validations as well as database backings using a visual approach and transform the model into running code. As it seems Microsoft relies on Silverlight technology so the resulting software doesn’t depend on any kind of server technology but the database connection. If you ever dug deeper into the Access domain you know what this means: there are lots of people running around that think they understand how databases are working (most of them does not, actually). But I don’t want to badmouth LightSwitch – it will be a great rapid prototyping tool that allows non-programmers to create and deploy database driven applications without writing one line of code and that could turn out to be a competitive approach to simple requirement projects (e.g. cart based shopping scenarios, company project meetings or votings).
